5.5-Magnitude quake hits Northeast Japan

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit Iwate Prefecture in northeast Japan early Friday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The incident happened at 9:57 a.m. local time with its epicentre determined at 40.2 degrees north latitude and 142.6 degrees east longitude and registering a depth of 30 km.The quake was registered at level 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in parts of Iwate.

No immediate reports of damage and injuries were made.The Japan Meteorological Agency did not issue tsunami alerts along the coast.
