This was the day that Flappy Bird was taken down from app stores for good. In the months that followed, our productivity levels returned to normal, phones stopped being smashed in sheer frustration, and the frustrating sound effects etched in our memory began to fade away.
But Dong Nguyen, the cruel developer who brought us this addictive game – only to snatch it from our grasp when it became too popular – is back, and his new game is meaner than ever.
Swing Copters has a few things in common with its big sister. You have to tap the screen rhythmically to keep the bizarre little creature, which is wearing a propeller hat, up in the air. It also has the same retro style. But what makes this game so difficult is how you’re constantly swinging from left to right, trying to negotiate your way through gaps without colliding into the mallets which swing from side to side.
When we played Swing Copters here at Metro, it took us 40 minutes to get us past that first pesky obstacle – and even then, we unceremoniously crashed and burned just seconds later. Many muttered expletives later, and we’re nowhere nearer to repeating our achievement.
Unless you’ve got the patience of a saint, it’s all too tempting just to delete the game from your iPhone and pray that it never seeps into your consciousness again. Alas, just like Flappy Bird, there’s always this little niggling sensation telling you to try again. We’re all going to end up missing our stop on the train, and looking up at the clock to realise it’s 3am and way past our bedtime.
And it seems many gamers aren’t amused, either. Swing Copters has only got a three-star rating on Apple’s App Store after more than 2,000 reviews. What’s more, the reaction on Twitter is a chorus of people groaning ‘It’s too haaaaaaaaaaaaaard.’
