The Tyranny of the Like Mind

A friend of some years,...someone who stood up for me when others would not,...and someone who's politics can be polar opposite my own, lamented, this week about removing some Facebook Friends, some he'd thought were good friends, from his list. The reasons were varied, but the causes were the same: intense polarization along some socio-political, or religious, lines, had moved some of these Facebook Friends to bring acrimony to dialogs that was both unnecessary, and destructive. He was quite eloquent in his reasoning. Although, I disagreed with a couple of his conclusions. Which raises a point....since when has it become a requirement that politics align in order to be friends?

I take the examples of Mary Matalin and James Carville. He's an extreme liberal Democrat. She's an extreme conservative Republican. Married since 1993. Met on the campaign trail, as I recall. Or G. Gordon Liddy and Lanny Davis. Liddy is certainly no friend of the Democrat. Lanny Davis, was an advisor to Bill Clinton in the White House. Best friends.

So, how's that happen? Simple. They focus on the things that matter. And put their differences into the right perspective.
